The annual Barren County Fair continues with livestock competitions at the Temple Hill Fairgrounds, with multiple shows scheduled through Saturday and no admission charge for visitors. Temple Hill Lions Club secretary William Myatt said the next three days showcase some of the best livestock in Kentucky and will lead into the 4-H floral hall competition next week in Glasgow.

“We have about almost two months of fair now,” Myatt said. “We start out the first weekend in June with the horse show, the next weekend after that we had our beauty pageants, took next week off, and then start in with the fair with the carnival week the last week of June.”

He said after another week off, the fair closes with the livestock shows that begin tonight (Thursday) and next week will be the 4-H floral hall at the Barren County Extension Office in Glasgow.

The fair is the largest fundraiser for the Temple Lions Club, Myatt said, and organizers are appreciative of everyone who has helped and attended so far.

Livestock week begins with the beef show, which Myatt said starts at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Temple Hill Fairgrounds. The dairy show is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday.

On Saturday, the schedule begins with the hog show at 7 a.m., followed by sheep and goats at 9 a.m., according to Myatt. While those events are underway, the fair also plans poultry, rabbit and guinea pig shows, all under roof so that weather does not affect the competition.

Myatt said the barns have been prepared by high school and middle school FFA students, whose advisors brought them out to clean and get the facilities ready. He said organizers appreciate the improvements students made as they readied the grounds for contestants and visitors.

According to Myatt, the livestock shows attract large participation and are considered by organizers to be among the strongest in Kentucky, with classes and entries approaching the scale of the Kentucky State Fair. He added that exhibitors put in extensive work to prepare animals for the judge, including training them to lead and grooming them for presentation.

Next week, the Barren County Fair will conclude with the 4-H floral hall competition at the Extension Office off West Main Street. Myatt said the event, planned for Thursday and Friday, will feature youth projects from across the county, reflecting the work of 4-H participants.

The floral hall is expected to include many submissions and displays, similar to the open floral hall earlier in the fair.
