Almost $1 million was awarded to two Kentucky organizations that are aiming to fight the commonwealth’s drug epidemic.

The funds come from the Kentucky Opioid Abatement Advisory Council, which awarded nearly $34 million across organizations, according to a Kentucky Association of Counties press release stated. Both Barren County-centric awards are focused on prevention, which is one of the three award categories — the others are treatment/recovery and research and innovation, according to the release.

The Kentucky Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs received $600,000 over two years for its “Kentucky Youth Prevention Initiative,” according to information provided by the commission. The funds will be used “to support youth program in several locations,” including in Warren, Daviess, Harlan, Jefferson and Barren counties.

South Central Workforce Development Board also received $392,586 over two years from the commission for its “From Recovery to Employment: A Recovery-Ready Workforce Pathway into High Demand Careers” initiative.

“The announcement confirms that organizations across the Commonwealth are prepared to deliver meaningful results for those battling the opioid crisis,” said Opioid Abatement Commission Director Evans. “By partnering with over 100 organizations, the Commission and the Attorney General are fulfilling their commitment to provide life-changing support and drive real progress in our communities.”

The Commission is responsible for distributing Kentucky’s share of the $1 billion from settlements with the corporations behind the deadly drug crisis. The other half of the recovered funds are distributed among the Commonwealth’s cities and counties according to a pre-determined formula, according to the release.
