Ky Board of Education opens nominations for Special Education award

The Kentucky Board of Education is accepting nominations for the 2026 Grissom Award for Innovation in Special Education.

The annual award is presented in the spring to recognize a Kentuckian or a Kentucky-based organization for outstanding dedication to improving achievement for students with disabilities. The award focuses on work that leads to better learning, postsecondary or workforce outcomes for students with learning or behavior differences, according to the Kentucky Board of Education.

Criteria for the Grissom Award include leadership or implementation of innovative practices in curriculum, instruction or assessment that result in improved outcomes. Districts or schools that demonstrate significant improvement or sustained excellence in learning or behavior outcomes for students with learning or behavior differences also may be considered.

Nominations for the Grissom Award for Innovation in Special Education will be accepted online through May 15 at 3 p.m. Eastern time. The Kentucky Board of Education plans to present the award during its August meeting.

The award is named in memory of Johnnie Grissom, a longtime Kentucky Department of Education employee who served as associate commissioner for the Office of Special Instructional Services. Grissom is remembered for her steadfast commitment, service and leadership in helping all students achieve at high levels regardless of their disabilities.
