Barren County High School’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program has received one of the Army’s top unit ratings after a comprehensive inspection by U.S. Army Cadet Command.
During the recent Junior Program Accreditation, cadets earned a score of 99.3, resulting in the coveted Honor Unit with Distinction designation, according to a Barren County Schools press release. The inspection is conducted every three years and evaluates the overall effectiveness of a JROTC program.
Evaluators reviewed multiple components of the Barren County unit, including a formal Color Guard presentation and a Drill Platoon performance. Cadets also completed individual interviews and portfolio reviews and delivered formal briefings on their Service Learning Project and their Continuous Improvement Project.
“This recognition reflects the dedication, discipline, and leadership of our JROTC instructors and cadets,” said Letitia Hughes, Barren County High School Principal.
A key focus of this year’s accreditation was the cadets’ Service Learning Project with the Barren River Animal Welfare Association. As part of that project, cadets regularly volunteer at the animal shelter, cleaning cages, bathing dogs, organizing supplies and providing care and attention to the animals.
“We volunteer at the animal shelter every week as part of our service learning project,” said Cadet Brooklyn Lane. “This year, I had the opportunity to serve as the Spring Coordinator, helping manage donations and fundraisers, organize schedules, and support our team’s work at BRAWA. As a group, we take on whatever is needed to support the shelter.”
