GLASGOW — Two locals were recognized Thursday morning at Barren Inc.’s inaugural Achievement in Business Awards news conference.
The event was created to show appreciation and to honor the local small business community, according to a news release from the Barren County Chamber of Commerce. The recipients of the Magnolia Award and Small Business Person of the Year Award were announced.
Sonya Davis was recognized with the Magnolia Award. The accolade seeks to recognize a female leader who demonstrates excellence in the Barren County community. Davis is involved in a number of initiatives, including Barren County Schools’ BC Reads and Feeds program, the local Boys and Girls Club, and workforce development.
“I have just a true passion for that. I mean, that is just where my heart falls,” Davis said. “And everything that we deal with from BC Reads and Feeds: to getting the food out, to doing the weekend bags, to making sure everybody has what they need in our community.”
The program ensures students and children in the community are provided meals when school is not in session.
The other recipient of an award was Danny Williams. He was honored with the Small Business Person of the Year, which seeks to recognize a local business owner who demonstrates excellence in entrepreneurship and operating a successful small business.
Williams operates Fine Arts Bistro, which remained open throughout the pandemic. He was commended for his support of the community’s work, too. He allows local artists, for example, to sell their artwork from his restaurant. Williams also supports other businesses in the area by using their products in his restaurant.
The Fine Arts Bistro recently provided plastic utensils and serving wear for volunteers aiding individuals impacted by tornadoes last December.
Both Davis and Williams said they were “speechless.” Their families were in attendance.
“This is a great new event that we have where we are able to honor our award winners and give them some time to be with their families and co-workers,” said Karissa Peterson, the chairperson of the Chamber’s board of directors. “We love how this has come together in this time that we have to honor these very deserving award winners.”
A luncheon is set for May 5, and Davis and Williams will be presented with their official awards. Anyone wishing to attend that event should contact Erin Hiles with the Barren County Chamber of Commerce or visit barreninc.com.
