GLASGOW, Ky. — Storms continue to pass through the region, and many roadways continue to be impacted.
Tracy Shirley, Director of Barren County Emergency Management, said several roads are blocked by trees and other debris. Many of those areas are in the northern portions of Barren County.
Shirley said Herbert Turner Road is closed. Mammoth Cave Street in Cave City was impacted in the night. Louisville Road near Southern States has reported debris.
“We’ve got a lot of trees and debris down on all of the north end of the county – the Park City and Cave City area,” said Tracy Shirley.
Motorists in the area should use caution. Some roadways have reported flooding, too.
“If anyone’s traveling around, we ask them to use extreme caution because I’m sure there’s stuff blown across the roadways we’re not aware of yet,” Shirley said.
Barren – Metcalfe Communications had not received reports of injuries as of 4:45 a.m.
“Of course, we don’t know whether it was tornadic or straight-line winds or anything,” Shirley said. “We won’t until we get out there and do a survey on that.”
Shirley said he spoke with the National Weather Service. They are triaging the state, which means they are considering which areas need the most attention first. It’s unclear the extent of damage, and most crews will not know until daybreak.
“Right now, we’re just going to call it storm damage. We don’t know what kind of storm until we get out there and check it out,” Shriely said. “Anything at this time would just be a guess, and we’re not into guessing.”
The National Guard has been deployed to some communities in the western portion of the state where storm damage has claimed the lives of at least 50 people. The death toll is unofficial but was reported during an update from Gov. Andy Beshear early Saturday.
“As far as assistance, if you’re talking about from the state and anybody else, that just all depends on what we find and what we request,” Shirley said. “They don’t push it to us. They wait for us to request it.”
County and state road crews are expected to clear roadways as the morning progresses. Some farmers have assisted law enforcement with blocked roadways through the early morning hours.
The Glasgow EPB reportedly restored power to all of its customers around 4:10 a.m. Approximately 2,394 continue to be without power in FRECC’s service area.
