GLASGOW, Ky. — The cause of a major fire that occurred last week along West Main Street in Glasgow continues to be unknown.

The Glasgow Fire Department responded to a fire at 826 West Main St. on Feb. 15. Someone reported the fire shortly before 4:30 p.m. Several other regional volunteer departments responded too.

Units responded and noted “heavy black smoke” from GFD Station 2. A four person crew was originally called to the scene, but there were other units involved as the fire progressed.

A fire fighter was injured when a portion of the building collapsed. Two portions of the building collapsed and caused a major gush or flames and smoke from those locations.

“Sgt. Wells had to jump from the top of ladder 2 truck injuring himself,” said Lt. Kevin Poynter’s narrative in the fire report. “Sgt. Thompson fell and hurt ribs also in this time.”

Both fire fighters were examined at the scene by EMS crews, according to the report.

The second collapse apparently caused nearby power lines and utility poles to collapse. The Glasgow EPB was requested to assist.

Crews were only able to go two to three feet inside the building due to heat and smoke.

The Glasgow Water Company was also called to assist the crews with additional water needs.

Crews were on scene for several hours.

The Kentucky Fire Marshall was alerted, but their office advised they could not report to Glasgow until Feb. 18. The cause of the fire is still undetermined.
