Three local students are among 82 seniors who recently graduated from the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science’s Class of 2026.
Justin Colgate from Caverna, Antonio Reyna from Barren County High School and Anderson Leea Slinker from Barren County High School were among the 82 graduates.
The Gatton Academy is a prestigious, state-funded residential high school for gifted students located on the campus of Western Kentucky University. This year’s group is the academy’s nineteenth graduating class and includes students from 36 counties across the commonwealth, according to the press release from the school.
Dr. Julia Roberts, executive director of the Gatton Academy and director of The Center for Gifted Studies, praised the Class of 2026 and the support they received from home.
“Everyone has played a significant role in the success of The Gatton Academy,” Roberts said. “Parents and family members, you have made The Gatton Academy a reality as you have trusted Gatton’s vision and mission, as well as the staff, to be everything they said they would be.”
Twenty-one members of the Class of 2026 were selected as National Merit semifinalists, according to the release, and 62% of graduates participated in faculty-sponsored research during their time at Gatton.
Gatton graduates can earn recognition as research, global and service scholars over their two years at the academy. Honor cords worn at graduation represent those achievements.
Research scholars complete at least two semesters of research and present their results to a professional audience after a vetting process.
Global scholars complete four semesters of STEM and global studies coursework or finish an NSLI-Y program.
Service scholars log a minimum of 60 hours of community service while attending Gatton.
