Barren County graduate and former Warren East boys’ head coach Brandon Combs was named the new Metcalfe County boys’ coach Friday.
Combs was the athletic director at East for the last six years. He was also the Raiders’ coach for six years. He also previously coached Menifee County when that team made a run to the 16th Region Tournament. Combs was also the coach at Cumberland County when the Panthers won a 16th District title.
He returns to a school where he first got a stab at coaching under Tim McMurtrey from 1999-2001, according to a press release from the school district.
“I am extremely humbled to be selected to lead a basketball program in a place that is special, like Metcalfe County,” Combs said via the press release. “This is definitely a full circle moment for my family and me, as I started my coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at MCHS while attending WKU.”
Combs said he wants the program to return to the level of respect it had during the McMurtrey tenure.
“We want to be mentioned with other programs as the best in the 4th Region. To do that, we must first work to improve in the 16th District. I want the student-athletes down the road to reflect and think about how their experiences in education-based athletics were and how competing at a high level was fun,” he said.
Combs received a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Campbellsville University and Rank I certification from the University of the Cumberlands, according to the press release.
He is married to Whitney Combs, and they have one son, Warner, who is 16.
