STAFF REPORT
Glasgow News 1
The South Central Kentucky Cultural Center is turning to the community for help as it works to preserve the stories and artifacts of Barren County. The center, which operates the Museum of the Barrens in downtown Glasgow, is hosting a volunteer fair Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Listen to an interview with Betty Durrett and Sharon Ganci below. They work to catalog the inventory that comes into the museum.
The museum is significantly behind on cataloging the many items donated over the years. Every object, from a postcard to a piano, must be assigned an identification number, measured, photographed and given a detailed inventory card before it is entered into the museum’s software system.
Volunteers also help at the front desk, greet guests and direct visitors through the exhibits. The Museum of the Barrens houses displays that highlight the history of Barren County. It has attracted visitors from Europe, including one traveler from Glasgow, Scotland, who made a point to stop in as part of a tour of U.S. cities named Glasgow.
Anyone with extra time, including recent retirees or residents looking for a way to serve the community, is encouraged to stop by the volunteer fair.
