Glasgow Middle School students are getting ready to take audiences to Neverland as they present the musical “Peter Pan Jr.” at the Glasgow High School auditorium this weekend.
Teacher Maddie Miller said the production has been in the works since shortly after fall break, with rehearsals beginning around the third week of October. She said it has been a long journey, but the students are bringing the show together and are excited to perform for the community.
The show will run March 13-15 at the Glasgow High School auditorium. Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., with a Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m. Miller said tickets are selling quickly, and buying online allows families to pick their seats more easily, though tickets will also be available at the door.
The musical features a large cast and crew of middle school students. Miller said about 56 students are in the cast, with an additional 10 to 12 working backstage. The backstage crew includes middle school students and support from Glasgow High School theater tech students, who are helping with lights, sound and set construction.
Miller said the high school tech students have saved her hours of stress on the technical side of the production.
Onstage, eighth-grader Brynlee Mackey plays Peter Pan. She said the role was a chance to tap into “kid energy” and enjoy the magic of Neverland while still growing up. She said she has watched classic versions of “Peter Pan” to help prepare for the role.
Joe Harvey plays Smee, a key pirate role, and said he enjoys the singing and acting that come with the part. He said acting is one of his passions and that he tries to perform with the mentality of being in the spotlight, whether or not he has the main role.
Miller said there are about 15 pirates in the show, including a few with speaking roles and the rest in the ensemble. She noted that the pirates signed up for pirate duty, not dance, but ended up handling some of the most demanding choreography in the production.
The show will include stage tricks to create the feel of flying and other magical moments, though there will be no aerial wires used for this production.
Miller also said the musical has been a cross-program effort, with the middle school’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society helping with props and sets. She said working across grades and programs has made the production more fun and has given many students a chance to showcase their talents on and off the stage.
