The National Weather Service in Louisville has issued a heat advisory for much of north central, northwest and south central Kentucky, with heat index values expected to reach up to 108 degrees today and through the weekend.
The advisory includes Barren, LaRue, Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Green, Logan, Warren, Simpson, Allen, Monroe, Metcalfe, Adair and Cumberland counties.
According to the National Weather Service, one heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. central time this evening.
A second advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. Central Saturday through 8 p.m. Central Sunday.
Forecasters say the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses, especially for people spending extended time outdoors or those with health conditions.
Officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room when possible and avoiding direct sun during the hottest parts of the day.
People who must work outside are urged to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, as recommended by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The weather service also says anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location.
Heat stroke is considered an emergency, and people are advised to call 911 if someone shows signs of severe heat illness.
