Barren County’s game at Warren Central began with a quickly played, low-scoring first quarter, but turned into a shoot out before all was said and done. The Trojans held off the Dragons, 38-32.
Warren Central took the opening drive and controlled the ball for more than seven minutes before scoring on a 21-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion gave the Dragons an 8-0 lead with 4:42 left in the first period.
The Trojans responded with a two-yard touchdown run from Briggs Harris. Jaxson Byrd ran in the two-point conversion, and the game was tied 8-8 with 11:30 left in the second period.
Less than three minutes later, the Dragons pulled ahead with a three-yard touchdown run. Barren stopped the two-point conversion to leave Central ahead 14-8.
With 4:16 left in the first half, Corbin Wells raced 26 yards to the end zone. Jacob Dooley added the PAT and Barren led 15-14. That was also the halftime score.
Barren pushed its lead to 23-14 a little over five minutes into the third quarter when Harris rushed 39 yards to the end zone. Byrd added the two-point conversion.
The Dragons answered four minutes later with a seven-yard touchdown run. Again the Trojans stopped the two-point conversion and they led 23-20.
Barren took a 10-point lead before the end of the third quarter on a 15-yard run by Braxton Carnes and an extra point kick by Dooley.
In the fourth quarter, Harris scored the Trojans’ final touchdown with a 19-yard run and Byrd added another two-point conversion.
The Dragons scored twice in the final period, but Barren stuffed both two-point conversion attempts to set the final 38-32 score.
Corbin Wells led the Trojans on the ground with 140 yards, while Carnes ran for 95 yards, Harris rushed for 83, and Byrd finished with 78 yards on the ground. Byrd also caught three passes for 35 yards.
Barren County improved to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in Class 5A, District 2. The Trojans close out the regular season Friday at Allen County-Scottsville at 7 p.m.
