There were some Glasgow city employees introduced Monday night — two with two legs, and one with four — at the Glasgow Common Council meeting.
The four-legged “employee” was Rico, a German Shepherd. He was sworn in as a new K9 officer with the Glasgow Police Department. He is paired with officer Alex Mutter.
Chief Guy Howie explained that the pairing process with the K9 officer and the handler is meticulous because the dog lives with the officer.
“There is an interview process to see if [the officer] is suitable to be a K9 handler,” the chief said. “Then there is a home inspection and the family has to be onboard with it.”
Mutter and Rico recently completed a 4-week patrol K9 training program. Rico is certified through American Working Dogs and American K9.
Rico and Mutter join Nico and officer John DuBarry, and Chaos and officer Jordan Saltsman as K9 units with the police department.
Howie said the training of the K9 units is paid for with seized illegal drug money.
“It’s not a burden on taxpayers, it’s a burden on drug dealers,” the chief told the council members.
Glasgow Fire Department Chief Lucas Tinsley introduced two of his newly appointed department leaders — assistant chief Ryan Gibson and battalion chief Justin Wells.
The council also approved the appointment of Anne Kathryn Murrey to fill a vacant seat on the Entertain Glasgow Committee for a three-year term.
Erika Young was approved to complete a vacant term on the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist and Convention Commission as a lodging representative. Her approval must still go before the Barren County Fiscal Court before she can take her seat on the commission.
The next regularly scheduled council meeting was to be on Memorial Day. Instead, there will be a special-called council meeting on Tuesday, May 26, at 6 p.m.
