It’s the third week in the Dawg Days of Summer Camp at Glasgow High School but the attendees are learning more and more each day while also having fun.

Several months ago, the Dawg Days of Summer Camp began simply as a vision to try and provide some kind of enrichment and remediation for kids who missed out on so much hands-on learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With overall case numbers continuing to decline, students are able to shed the virtual classrooms and return to in-person learning.

“One camper told me this was just like school, but fun,” Dr. William Thornbury joked during Tuesday’s School Board meeting.

A video was played for the board highlighting the kind of educational activities these children are participating in.

The 200 enrollees, ranging from incoming 1st through 6th grade, are learning farming and gardening skills, hydro dipping, laser engraving and building roller coasters. This is thanks to the tutelage of fifteen teachers and numerous student volunteers.

“They’re learning but also having fun,” District Assessment Coordinator Tara Martin says. “And that is the whole goal and purpose of this camp.”

The overwhelming success of the inaugural Dawg Days of Summer Camp means an opportunity for future camps. And according to Martin, that is the ultimate plan.

“We definitely have plans to continue this for a couple more years,” she says. “We’re actually thinking about going bigger next year since we reached our 200 student limit in two days. This is definitely something we’re considering doing for the next two-to-three years.”

The Dawg Days of Summer Camp will last until June 25.
