The Park City City Commission’s May meeting took on an emotional tone as Mayor Donna Scavo read and signed a proclamation dedicating Nov. 3 as Chris Martin Day.
Martin drowned in August 2000 in Pulaski County, where he and friends had been celebrating on a houseboat.
Bonita Martin, Chris’ mother, recorded the ceremony.
“Of course he was perfect in my eyes,” she said. “He wanted to do big things, going into cancer treatment research.”
Chris had planned to attend WKU and had joined a fraternity whose members still check in on Bonita.
She said she hopes people will “come out and we’ll have a little party,” celebrating Martin’s life.
The commission also officially named an alleyway Chris Martin Way. As a child, Martin often rode his bike along the stretch with friends. A dedication ceremony for Chris Martin Way is scheduled for May 23 at 10 a.m.
Shifting to municipal needs, the city’s fire department approached Mayor Donna Scavo for assistance in repairing and updating one of its bay doors. The total cost of the project was quoted at $4,500. Scavo and the commission agreed to cover half of the expense.
“Those doors, I think, were put in in 1997,” said Barren County magistrate Ronnie Stinson. “Those other doors were upgraded about eight years ago.” Stinson’s district covers Park City, and he is the former fire department chief.
The commission was also set to discuss plans for the former city hall building, but Scavo asked that the item be tabled due to an undisclosed development. While no specifics were provided, she said a special-called meeting may be scheduled once details are finalized.
In her report, Scavo said a new development planned for the city’s interstate exit has been dubbed Mammoth Cave Market. After speaking with the owner, she said a general contractor is expected to be selected this week, “hopefully by Wednesday.” Groundbreaking is planned for the day after Memorial Day.
The next scheduled meeting of the Park City Commission is June 1.
