GLASGOW — Local officials are urging folks to call before they burn debris due to the statewide spring wildfire season, which began Tuesday.

Burning restrictions are in effect across the state. A statement from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet says burning is prohibited between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland through April 30.

Marcus Thurman, deputy director of Glasgow-Barren County Emergency Management, said a non-emergency line exists for calls deemed non-emergent but still informative. The number is (270) 651-1175.

“This lets them gather information and log the event for the chance anyone calls it in,” according to a Facebook post by Glasgow-Barren County Emergency Management. “This prevents the agencies from responding to find out it was actually a control burn.”

Burning within Glasgow’s city limits is restricted by city ordinance at all times. A permit is required from the Glasgow Fire Department.

Officials urge anyone burning debris during the wildfire season to use caution. The statement says the Kentucky Division of Forestry has responded to 93 wildland fires since Jan. 1 and many have been attributed to debris burning.

Before deciding to burn, officials suggest monitoring weather patterns, including humidity levels and wind speeds.
