GLASGOW — A man crashed a passenger car early Sunday along Big Meadow Road.

The Barren County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash around 2:32 a.m. in reference to a collision with injuries. Authorities observed a car against a tree and an injured person in the passenger seat.

Elmer Coffey, 49, was identified as the driver. He had an active warrant, according to a citation.

The man was unable to keep his eyes open while he spoke to a deputy. His eyes were also “pinpoint.”

“Coffey was staggering around and mumbling and not making any sense while he was engaging in a normal conversation,” according to a citation.

Authorities conducted field sobriety tests, and Coffey failed them. He apparently told the deputy “I’m sorry man. I’m messed up.”

A clear bag was located during a search of Coffey. It was suspected to be methamphetamine.

Coffey was transported to the hospital and consented to a blood draw. He was charged with buying or possessing drug paraphernalia and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence.
