Only two days following Gov. Andy Beshear’s executive order to require masks in Kentucky schools the Kentucky Board of Education approved an emergency regulation that would overlap Beshear’s mandate by possibly mandating masks until May.

The Kentucky Board of Education unanimously voted Thursday afternoon to approve an emergency regulation that requires anyone inside a public K-12 school to wear a mask.

Due to state law, the regulation can only last 270 days — which lands on May 9, 2022. Education Commissioner Jason Glass said the mandate could be lifted earlier.

Glass said, “It is not the intent of the board to require masking any longer than what is necessary.”

Beshear’s order lasts 30 days from signing and is subject to renewal.
