Glasgow opened strong and finished strong, but between the first and seventh innings, couldn’t keep Russell County off the base paths. In the end, the Lady Scotties fell by a run, 5-4, in Russell Springs on Monday.
In the first inning, Kayla Kirkpatrick hit a one-out double to get things started for Glasgow. Jakylie Green followed with a single that moved Kirkpatrick to third. Green stole second before Kirkpatrick scored on a ball hit by Kinley Stephens that was misplayed. Green moved to third on the error and Stephens took second.
Green eventually scored on a catcher’s error to give the Lady Scotties a 2-0 lead. That lead held until the bottom of the second inning when the Lady Lakers slapped a two-run homer that tied the game.
Russell County added two more runs in the bottom of the third and did not trail again in the game.
The lead was 5-2 headed into the top of the seventh inning where Glasgow scored its other two runs and had a shot at tying the game.
Reece England led off the seventh with a single. After a fly out, England was thrown out going to second on a fielder’s choice ball hit by Gracie Walker.
Kerrigan Hagan followed with a two-run homer that scored herself and Walker.
Kirkpatrick kept the two-out rally alive when she reached base on an error, but a strike out ended the game.
Hagan went the distance in the circle. She allowed nine hits, struck out five and walked none.
Hagan, Green, Kirkpatrick, England and Walker each had a hit in the game.
Glasgow returns to action Tuesday at Barren County at 5 p.m. in a 15th District showdown.
