Addyson McFall caught fire in the second quarter Monday night, and provided the spark for Barren County to take control of a 62-32 win over Glasgow in the first game of the Girls 15th District Tournament.

With the top seed Trojanettes clinging to a two-point lead, McFall drove the lane and hit a shot midway through the second period. Mahalia Burton followed with a layup, which forced Glasgow coach Kelsey Kirkpatrick to call a time out in an effort to stall the rally.

Out of the break McFall snatched a steal and scored in transition, she followed that 20 seconds later with a 3-pointer to hand Barren a 26-15 lead with 3:20 left in the first half.

“McFall, thank goodness she came to play in that second quarter,” Barren County coach Piper Lindsey said in her postgame interview.

The senior guard hit another 3 after Glasgow’s Kayla Kirkpatrick had scored four straight points. McFalls’s shot pushed the Trojanettes’ lead to 10 points, 29-19, with 2:04 left in the second period. It proved to be the dagger in the Lady Scotties’ hopes of pulling an upset.

Barren led 33-19 by halftime. The lead was 53-27 after three quarters.

The game had a different complexion in the first period.

“It had me ready to run up and down the court,” Kelsey Kirkpatrick said of the first quarter. “That’s the kind of play we’ve been asking for all season long, and [the players] bought into it and ran with it.”

Shelby Byrd opened the game with a layup for Barren. Reese England responded with a 3-pointer that put Glasgow ahead 3-2.

Byrd and Ann Ashley Atkinson scored consecutive baskets for the Trojanettes, but the next nearly five minutes belonged to the Lady Scotties.

Riley Strode made a free throw, then Kinley Stephens hit a shot in the lane. Kayla Kirkpatrick followed with a basket, then Strode made a layup. Kayla Kirkpatrick capped the run with a 3 with 31 seconds showing in the opening period.

Glasgow led 13-6 after that 3-pointer. Addy Slagle buried a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left in the the quarter to set the score at 13-9 headed into the second period.

“We’re going to call it first game jitters,” Lindsey said. “I was disappointed after the first quarter.”

The Lady Scotties’ season ends with an 8-22 record. They lose two seniors, Addyson Norris and Hannah Jolly.

The Trojanettes improve to 28-2 overall. They face Allen County-Scottsville on Thursday night in the district title game at 6 p.m. at Glasgow High School.
