The concrete replacement project will continue to benefit people even after the new judicial center is constructed.
As previously reported, after the Barren County Judicial Center is completed in 2028, the county clerk’s, sheriff’s and the judge-executive’s office will relocate to the current courthouse on the Glasgow Square.
“We’re going to reuse this [courthouse] after the people move into the new [judicial center],” Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said. “This is a center point of our community.”
In the meantime, the sidewalks around the current courthouse will be replaced.
The Administrative Office of the Courts will reimburse the county up to $195,065, which will cover the entirety of the project, Byrd said. The project will replace all the concrete and sidewalks in the inner part of the Square except the stairs leading into the building itself.
This project will likely be done in phases so as to not affect traffic too much, and will improve safety around the current Barren County Courthouse, Byrd said.
“We’ve had some issues with people falling…because there’s some uneven spots in the sidewalks,” Byrd said during an interview with WCLU. “These sidewalks have not been touched, and also you have some areas — like in our handicap ramps — where the trees have affected the [path].”
Grey Rock Construction will be doing the replacements over the course of six weeks, Byrd previously told Glasgow News 1. The project is set to start in April.
“We’re excited,” Byrd said in the WCLU interview. “It’s such a great improvement to our community. It’s a needed improvement; will look great…we’re excited to get it going and make that improvement to our community.”
Byrd asked for public patience as the project begins.
