Kentucky Transportation road crews continue to make progress clearing and cleaning state roads.
Drivers are advised to exercise caution as slick spots and black ice continue to be a concern, Governor Andy Beshear said during his Jan. 28 winter storm update. Slick spots and black ice will especially be an area of concern during peoples’ morning commutes as low temperatures will have caused melted snow and ice to refreeze, according to a governor’s office press release.
“Since Friday, state and contracted plow crews have tracked 741,000 miles, enough to circle the earth more than 29 times,” the release stated.
Beshear said road conditions vary by county. Barren County Road Department Supervisor Jamie DeGroft told Glasgow News 1 that county roads remain slick, and Glasgow Public Works Supervisor Jim McGowan said roads in the city are looking better but echoed the governor’s comment that slick spots remain.
Ten deaths were also announced by Beshear as a result of the weather. The families received assistance from the Team Kentucky Emergency Relief Fund, the release stated. Barren County Emergency Management Director Garland Gilliam said there were no weather-related deaths reported in the county.
