Shelly Buck has been selected as the new assistant principal at South Green Elementary. Buck said she brings 17 years of experience in education to the role. She has spent 15 of those years as a classroom teacher and the last two as a math coach funded through the Kentucky Department of Education at her school.
Buck said her path to education started early. “I was an only child, so my very first day of kindergarten, and being around all the students…that was my little outlet. So I have decided ever since I was in kindergarten that I wanted to be a teacher”. She went on to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in elementary education, along with National Board Certification as an early childhood generalist. An early childhood generalist is a specialized educator for children typically aged 0-5 years.
She later completed her principal certification, which led her to seek roles that would allow her to support teachers and staff beyond her own classroom. She said a four-year grant became available in her district, and she served two years in a grant-funded math coaching position that focused on cognitive coaching and supporting teachers in their classrooms. Buck said that experience helped prepare her for school leadership and contributed to her interest in becoming an assistant principal.
Looking ahead to her new role at South Green Elementary, Buck said she has three main goals. First, she wants to continue the legacy and history of excellence at Glasgow Independent Schools. She also said she plans to focus on closing achievement gaps, adding that there is always room for improvement in education and that she hopes to bring in strategies to help raise student performance. Finally, Buck said she wants to maintain strong, positive relationships with students, teachers and families.
She said building those connections is one of the most important parts of her work and that she looks forward to getting to know South Green’s students and their families. Buck said she is excited about the opportunity to serve the South Green Elementary community and to work on ways to support and increase student achievement.
