Glasgow native Dwayne Depp has become the Franklin County Sheriff.
Franklin County Judge-Executive Michael Mueller appointed Depp to fulfill the term of Sheriff Chris Quire, who retired effective July 31. The next sheriff election is in 2026. In his retirement letter, Quire requested that Depp be appointed as his replacement.
“Moving forward, my request is that you appoint my chief deputy, Dwayne Depp, to fulfill the remainder of my term as sheriff until the next election in 2026,” wrote Quire in his retirement letter to Mueller that was reported in The State Journal. “He is more than capable, and I believe there is no other individual that can carry on the thoughts and values we have practiced over the past several years.”
Depp graduated from Glasgow High School in 1988 and is a member of the Glasgow High School Hall of Fame. Depp attended Murray State University, eventually being named the rookie of the year after his first football season, according to the Journal.
In his senior year of college at Murray State, Depp took the entry exam for the Kentucky State Police and went to the police academy in 1991. He was placed in Frankfort, according to the Journal.
He graduated from Kentucky State University with a degree in criminal justice after beginning his law enforcement career.
Depp is the first African American to become sheriff, according to the Journal. He said running for his own term is not something he’s thinking about at the moment.
