Harold Chester Swango

Sep 11, 2024 | 5:06 AM

Harold Chester Swango passed away peacefully on September 9, 2024 at Hospice of Southern Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Betty Mae Swango, and his parents Chester Carl and Lula Bell Swango. He is survived by his daughter Tamara Snyder (Larry), two grandchildren, Dr. Jeremy Snyder (Mary Meghan) and Dr. Kaitlyn Greer (Dylan), and three great grandchildren, Lena Snyder, Joseph Harold Snyder, and Everett Greer.

Harold was born July 8, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He grew up on Colerain Ave. in the Camp Washington neighborhood of the Queen City. A survivor of the 1937 flood, he recalled being passed out a second-floor window to a waiting rescue boat. Harold graduated from Hughes High School in 1947. He enlisted in the US Army in 1952, serving as a medic during the Korean War. Following an introduction at church, Harold and Betty married in 1953. Together they were active members in their church community, where he served as assistant pastor, song leader, and teacher. Upon his retirement from General Electric after 37 years, they moved to Bowling Green to be near their daughter and grandchildren.

Harold will be remembered as a man of strong Christian faith and fervent devotion to his family. Nothing brought him greater joy or pride than watching his grandchildren grow into successful adults with families of their own. He entered his reward having lived a full life of 95 years filled with faith, hope and love.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, September 13, 2024 at the J.C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Bowling Green Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Southern Kentucky.
