Hulen Lee Sanders, age 76, of Bee Spring, passed from this life on Friday, September 18, 2026, surrounded by perfect love and peace, as God sent His angels to carry him home. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and neighbor, Hulen leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and genuine friendship that will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. The Edmonson County native was born on January 27, 1950, to the late Eulas and Jerlene Sanders. Following the passing of his father, Lon Rich stepped into Hulen’s life at a pivotal time, becoming a father figure and providing the love, guidance, and support that helped shape the man Hulen would become. He was united in marriage to his beloved wife of fifty-six years, Ronna VanMeter Sanders, who survives.
Hulen spent more than forty years behind the chair as a barber at Twin Lake Barber Shop, on the square in Leitchfield, where he built lasting friendships and became a familiar and trusted face to generations of people. He was the kind of man who never met a stranger and never let a friend pass by without a smile, a greeting, or a few encouraging words. His genuine kindness and easygoing nature made people feel welcome, and his friendship was something they could always count on. He was a good neighbor, always willing to lend a helping hand, share a story, or simply take a moment to visit. After retiring from barbering, Hulen followed his passion for the outdoors by opening Sanders’ Archery in 1994, creating a place where fellow sportsmen could gather and share in the activities he loved. A true outdoorsman at heart, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and trap shooting, and many of his happiest moments were spent outdoors with good friends, making memories along the way.
Hulen’s faith was at the heart of his life. He was saved at Christian Home General Baptist Church, and joined Bee Spring Missionary Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful member and cherished the love of his church family. For more than twenty-four years, he faithfully served as a trustee, giving his time to the place that meant so much to him. He was also a member of Washington Meredith Masonic Lodge #355 F&AM, where he valued the fellowship and brotherhood he found among his fellow members. His greatest joys in life were found in the people he loved most. He shared an especially close bond with his daughter, Jodi. Their special relationship was evident to everyone who knew them. He was a proud Pa to her boys, Brody and Brayden, and took great pride watching them grow into successful, young men.
He leaves to cherish his memory— his adoring wife, Ronna VanMeter Sanders; his treasured daughter, Jodi Sanders Johnson (Brad) of Bee Spring; his cherished grandsons, Brody and Brayden Johnson; his siblings, Lorama Davis (Johnnie) of Sweeden and Mark Rich (Renee) of Brownsville; nephew, Wes Davis (Jenny) of Chalybeate, along with extended family, many dear friends and loyal customers who will forever hold him close in their hearts.
Hulen will be laid to rest in Bee Spring Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to: Bee Spring Missionary Baptist Church or Cemetery Fund, c/o Mark Rich.
Funeral service is 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 2026, at Bee Spring Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation is 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday, and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. There will be a Masonic service Sunday at 6 p.m. at Patton Funeral Home Brownsville Chapel.
