Relay for Life is returning to Glasgow this weekend after a nine-year break, with organizers at the Barren County Family YMCA planning a full evening of activities to support the American Cancer Society.

The community event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Beaver Creek Park, according to the YMCA.

Organizers say the fundraising event is designed to bring the community together to raise money and awareness for cancer research and support services.

Attendees can expect a variety of entertainment options throughout the evening.

The schedule includes music from local artists, a DJ-led dance party and performances from cheer groups.

Food will be available for purchase from Slack’s Barbecue, the Kiwanis Club and Pelican’s Ice, giving families and teams a chance to make an evening of the event.

Relay for Life will also keep its traditional focus on honoring those affected by cancer.

The event will open with a ceremony and survivor laps, giving cancer survivors a moment of recognition and reflection.

Community members are also expected to offer speeches and messages of support as part of the program.

A key feature of the night will be the luminary ceremony, scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Organizers say participants will be able to honor cancer survivors and caretakers by purchasing luminaries in their names.

Each luminary costs $5 and can be purchased in advance at the Barren County Family YMCA or online.

Local teams, including a YMCA team and several community groups, are forming to walk and raise funds throughout the evening.

Money raised from team efforts and luminary sales will go to the American Cancer Society, according to event organizers.

Officials say they hope the return of Relay for Life after nearly a decade will renew local support for families impacted by cancer and the search for better treatments.
