Francis Gene (Baskett) Austin, 87, of Gamaliel, KY, passed away Sunday, September 6th, surrounded by her family at her home.
Gene was born in Tompkinsville, KY on January 13, 1939, a daughter of the late Delpha (Thompson) and Homer Baskett.
On July 26, 1968, she married Charles Austin, who preceded in death on September 24, 2002.
Gene was a 1958 graduate of Tompkinsville High School. After high school she went to cosmetology school. Gene worked as a seamstress at Stitches for 22 years, while doing cosmetology on the side. She was a cosmetologist for 67 years. Gene enjoyed yard work, word search puzzles, sewing, listening to music and talking on the phone with family and friends.
At 12 years old, she was saved and became a member at Mill Creek Baptist Church, and she attended Gamaliel Baptist Church.
Gene is survived by two daughters, Nicole Headrick, and husband, Wayne, of Gamaliel, KY; Cheryl Gentry, and husband, Billy, of Red Boiling Springs, TN; a son, Charles Austin, Jr. “Chuck,” and wife, Tina, of Evansville, IN; 9 grandchildren, Lily Headrick, Amanda Murphy (James), Courtney Helmbrecht (Nick), Caleb Austin (Michelle), Nicholas Austin (Mikaelah), Chessny Gentry, Joey Gentry (Anna), Jermey Gentry (Jessica), Sean Gentry (Mackenzie); 9 great grandchildren and was expecting another.
Other than her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Jennette Poland and Betty Carter.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11th at Yokley Trible Funeral Home in Tompkinsville, KY, with Bro. Ben Prevette and Bro. Jeff Blackwell officiating. Burial will follow at Gamaliel Cemetery.
Visitation is Thursday, 4-8p.m., and Friday, 8:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m. at Yokley Trible Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gene’s memory may be made to the Backpack Program, GES or Gamaliel Cemetery.
