Barren County Fiscal Court discussed the county’s ongoing tourism matter during its meeting this morning, including more details on the possibility of ending its 27-year partnership with Glasgow.
Eddie Jones, a McCracken County Commissioner in Paducah, outlined how that county established new revenue streams through sports tourism taxes.
Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd also reviewed budget line items for the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist and Convention Commission.
Byrd said that if the county separates from the tourism commission, there are no plans to reduce salaries or eliminate jobs. She also offered support to the existing commission as the county moves forward should the two entities part ways.
Byrd said additional tourism tax revenue could help fund local tourism efforts, particularly operations associated with the proposed Cave City Agricultural Expo Center. She said the proposed tax would be implemented through a tiered rollout, beginning at 1 percent and increasing each year over a four-year period.
This story will be updated with more details.
