Sylvia Monroe Smith, age 88, of Bowling Green, peacefully departed this life on Monday, July 20, 2026, at Signature HealthCare in Bowling Green. The Edmonson County native was born on December 5, 1937, to the late Harry and Christine Wells Monroe. She shared her life with her husband, Don Smith, who preceded her in death.
Sylvia was a woman of remarkable strength, determination, and countless talents. Alongside her husband, she spent many years traveling the highways, hills, and countryside of the United States as an 18-wheeler driver. She treasured the opportunity to witness the beauty of God’s creation across the country, finding joy in the rolling hills, majestic mountains, and ever-changing landscapes that made each journey memorable.
While she enjoyed traveling, her heart was always happiest at home, where she lovingly cared for her family. A gifted homemaker and creative soul, Sylvia had a talent for making something beautiful out of almost anything. She found joy in crafting and was an exceptional seamstress whose skill and creativity allowed her to sew, mend, and create just about anything she imagined. She was equally known for her wonderful cooking and took great pleasure in gathering her loved ones around the table, preparing delicious meals that nourished both body and soul. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and welcome, where family made cherished memories together. Sylvia’s greatest blessing came as a young girl when she was saved at Cedar Springs United Baptist Church. She remained a member there, and her enduring faith was the cornerstone upon which she lived each day.
She leaves to cherish her memory— her two loving sons, Timothy Doyle (Donetta) of Glasgow and Wesley Brooks (Jenny) of Bowling Green; four beloved grandchildren, Joshua Doyle (Michelle), Justin Brooks (Jennifer), Katie Brooks, and Kathina Greenwood (Chris); twelve treasured great-grandchildren, Mason, Christian, Makenzie, Hunter, Benjamin, and Carter Doyle, Jordan, Autumn, Abigail, and Annabelle Brooks, and Addison and Reid Steele; along with her sister-in-law, Delores Monroe. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Irvin Monroe (Myreline) and J.T. Monroe. Sylvia’s gentle spirit, generous heart, and unwavering love for those she held dear will be remembered always.
Visitation will be 3—7 PM, Wednesday, July 22, 2026 and 9—11 AM, Thursday, July 23, 2026 at Patton Funeral Home Brownsville Chapel. The Funeral Service will be 11 AM, Thursday, July 23, 2026 at Patton Funeral Home Brownsville Chapel. Interment will be in Lambert Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lambert Cemetery Fund, c/o Bro. Malcolm Doyle.
