Glasgow police are using the run-up to the July 4 holiday to remind residents about the city’s fireworks rules and to offer safety tips as fireworks season ramps up.

Officials say the city’s consumer fireworks ordinance spells out when fireworks can be used, where they can be set off and what penalties apply for breaking the rules.According to the ordinance, consumer fireworks may be used within Glasgow city limits from noon to 10 p.m. on June 28 through July 3 and on July 5. On July 4, fireworks are allowed from noon until 11 p.m.

The ordinance also allows fireworks between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day.

Anyone who wants to use consumer fireworks on other days must obtain a permit from the city fire chief or a designee. The application must be filed at least 15 days before the proposed event, and any permit that is granted is valid for a four-hour period between noon and 10 p.m. on the permitted date.

The ordinance requires anyone lighting fireworks to stay at least 200 feet away from any structure, vehicle or other person, following state law. Glasgow police say that distance is meant to help reduce the risk of injuries or fires caused by stray sparks or malfunctioning fireworks.

The penalties for violating the fireworks rules increase with each offense. A first offense is treated as a civil offense with a fine of up to $50, a second offense can bring a fine of up to $100 and a third offense can lead to a fine of up to $200. A fourth or later violation is a misdemeanor and may carry a criminal fine of up to $500, a sentence of up to 10 days in jail or both, according to the ordinance.

Maj. Terry Flatt, the Glasgow Police Department’s public information officer, is also promoting several safety tips for residents who choose to use fireworks. Those tips include attending public fireworks displays when possible, observing all local laws, supervising children, keeping a safe distance and using proper safety equipment. Police also recommend keeping pets in a secure and comfortable environment to reduce stress and prevent them from running away because of loud noises.
