U.S. Senate candidate Charles Booker brought a message of remembrance, hope and action to Glasgow on Friday morning as he helped kick off a Juneteenth celebration at Twyman Park. Booker spoke for about 15 minutes, addressing a crowd gathered ahead of the park’s Juneteenth festivities. During his remarks, Booker focused on the significance of Juneteenth as a moment to honor the end of slavery and to recognize the work that remains. He told the audience, “We’re fighting for healing. We’re fighting for a better future for our families, for Kentucky, for the country, for the world, and Juneteenth is our reminder that it’s still possible.” Booker also drew on his own family history, saying his ancestors were enslaved and some were lynched in Kentucky.

He said he does not take his current role in public life for granted and framed his campaign as part of a broader push for justice, healing and opportunity. Throughout the speech, Booker urged listeners to see themselves as part of that ongoing change. He encouraged people to support one another, to “lock arms together” and to use their gifts, talents and votes to push for a more just Kentucky.

Booker said he believes change is already underway and described Juneteenth as both a celebration and a “heavy day” that calls people to reflect on those who came before them.
