The next Barren-Metcalfe Emergency Medical Services station was introduced in Barren County on Tuesday morning during a groundbreaking ceremony.

“This groundbreaking isn’t just about starting construction, it is about seeing a shared vision finally come to fruition,” said medical services executive director Dr. Joe Middleton during the ceremony. “This station is important to the southern area of Barren County because it has continued to grow, not only in population, but also in activities. Families, visitors, travelers rely on our emergency services, and we know one thing simple in EMS, time matters.”

The station will be at the corner of Matthews Mill Road and U.S. 31-E south of Glasgow in the Haywood community.

The medical services board members approved a new station in Haywood after researching call volumes in the county, and response times to certain areas of the county.

Middleton said in a previous interview with WCLU that times to reach the Austin Tracy area of Barren County were about 19 minutes. Also response times to other areas in the southern part of the county were too high. Those communities in the southern area of the county were being responded to from the station on East Main Street. Haywood is south of Glasgow and the new station is at the intersection of Matthews Mill Road and U.S. 31-E (Scottsville Road).

Middleton also said the plan is to have the building completed and operational in six months.

Collins Custom Homes was the lowest of the three submitted construction bids at $579,275.
