Caverna Independent students and their families lined up Thursday morning at the Cave Area Conference Center for the annual Readifest event, hosted by the school district’s family resource and youth services center.

In addition to receiving basic school supplies, students were able to get prizes and other items from area vendors, businesses and community partners.

“I always enjoy this community event,” said Wilma Bunnell, director of family and community engagement for the school district. “Our community members come out and help us and we just want to help the students and the families have what they need to start school.

“It’s just always a great time. We enjoy seeing everybody. We’ve got a really large turnout today and a lot of smiling kids.”

This event was a day after Caverna Elementary hosted a kindergarten camp, where students got to experience school before their first day. So some of the new students got to see familiar faces on Thursday.

Kindergarten teacher Beth Carter said it was very special to see her new students again before the school year starts since they can begin building positive relationships and connections. She added that Readifest is also great for parents.

“I think it helps the parents know what resources our community offers to them in several different areas of things that they might need,” Carter said. “But everybody’s happy and excited.

“It’s a good start to the beginning of the year.”

As students walked through the vendor lines, Caverna Elementary Principal Vonda Stockton greeted them with a huge smile. She said this event is a great way to interact with students and their families, and it shows how much support Caverna gets from the community.

“I think it says that we are united to do what’s best for our kids,” Stockton said. “Educate our kids and provide what they need.”

Terry Smith, director of Caverna’s family resource and youth services center, said he enjoys seeing the kids’ excitement when they get their school supplies and other fun items provided by the area.

“We are in a great community,” Smith said. “It’s just wonderful.”

The first day of school for Caverna Independent students is Aug. 13.
