Jun 5, 2024 | 10:29 AM

James “Jim” Henry Burt Sr., age 81, of Caneyville, KY, passed away Friday, (May 31, 2024) near his home in Caneyville.

He was born on July 29, 1942 in Camden, NJ, the son of the late Leonard and Dorothy Brockway Burt.

A Veteran of the US Navy, Jim was a retired union carpenter, a champion archer and former youth archery instructor. An animal lover, he enjoyed fishing, building things, and listening to bluegrass music, especially his favorite band, McDonald Road. Spending time with family always put a smile on his face. More than anything, Jim was a good samaritan; always helping those in need in any way that he could, often without being asked. He was a proud member of Carpenters Union Local 353 in his home state of New Jersey.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Geraldine Burt, of Caneyville; a son, James Henry Burt Jr. (Debra) of Lebanon, TN; a daughter, Cheryl Johnson (Richard) of Caneyville; 10 grandchildren, Eric Heller, Charles James Heller, James Burt III, Carolyn Alexis Burt, Daniel James Burt, Amber & RJ Johnson, Jackie Bogle, Reagan Ottinger & Justin Maloney; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Terri Dougher of Metford Lake, NJ. Three nieces and nephews also survive.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Daniel “Danny” Burt; a granddaughter, Charlene Maloney; and a brother, Jeff Burt.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation was chosen and a private Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Edmonson County Archery c/o Joy Curtis, 220 Wildcat Way, Brownsville, KY 42210.
