James “Burl” Hunt

James “Burl” Hunt, age 98, of Glasgow, formerly of Lamb, Kentucky went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at the Shanti Niketan Hospice house in Glasgow.

Burl was born at Lamb, KY in a log cabin on May 22, 1926 to the late Willie D. “Jack” and Mona Arterburn Hunt.

Burl gave a testimony of being saved at Dover Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Herman, KY as a young man while Ish Richey was preaching. Later in life, he joined Dry Fork Church of Christ.

He married the late Ruth Burgess on January 31, 1948 and they were blessed to enjoy 58 years of marriage. Burl was a true steward of the land. He loved working on his farm in Lamb, Kentucky on Jack Hunt Road. He was devoted to his family, his friends, and his farm. Together they were blessed with four children, the late Debbie Deckard (Billy) of Glasgow, Connie Eaton (the late Wayne Eaton) of Glasgow, Freddie Hunt (Linda) of Lamb, and Ellen Headrick (Eddie) of Tompkinsville. Pa (as all his grandchildren called him) had seven grandchildren: Cindy Jackson (Shelton), Kelly Deckard (Heather), Nikki Eaton, Jason Headrick, Jordan Headrick (Brandy), Jessica Hunt-Khouri (Paul), Matthew Hunt, and two step grandchildren—Shelly Wisdom (Rick) and Pansy Stephens (Nick). Pa is also survived by nine great grandchildren: Nick Jackson, Will Jackson, Hope Deckard, Gracey Deckard, Colton Eaton, Macy Smith, Ellea Smith, Isaac Headrick, Palmer Headrick, with another due in August, seven step grandchildren: Addie Johnson, Chloe Johnson, Tyler Hodges, Paige Pulliam, Jameson Wisdom, Kelsey Harlan and Reagan Kingrey, three great-great grandchildren: Kelby Eaton, Grayson Eaton and Hayden Eaton, with another due in August, and nine step great-great grandchildren: Lilah Hodges, Tripp Hodges, Cora Hodges, June Pulliam, Campbell Pulliam, Rowen Harlan, Tate Harlan, Blakely Harlan and Lainey Kingery.  Burl is also survived by his brother Ray Hunt (Willie Mae) of Louisville and sisters-in-law Pearline Hunt of Bowling Green and Loretta Hunt of Glasgow. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, daughter, son-in-law, a sister Agnes Kathryn Arden (Bob); brothers and sisters-in-law Carlos Hunt (Delcie), Ernest Hunt (Jane), Lawrence Hunt (Helen), Clarence Hunt, Fay Hunt, and Virginia Burgess Thomas (Arlie).

Burl was a 61 year member of H.A.M. Henderson Lodge (Bethlehem), a magistrate for eight years in District 2 of Monroe County, a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of the Bethlehem Cemetery Committee for 40+ years.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Yokley Trible Funeral Home in Tompkinsville, KY with burial in the Bethlehem Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Friday, May 31, and from 8:00 a.m. until time of services at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Bethlehem Cemetery or the Shanti Niketan Hospice House where he was wonderfully cared for by all staff the past five months.
