GLASGOW — A deputy jailer at Barren County Detention Center has been arrested after he allegedly stole money from an inmate.

Dustin T. Young, 25, of Edmonton, was arrested Wednesday around 11:23 a.m. He was charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition ($1,000 or more but under $10,000).

Jailer Aaron Shirley contacted Kentucky State Police to investigate the incident that allegedly happened in the early morning hours of Jan. 30, according to an arrest citation. Young was apparently seen on video surveillance cameras retrieving money from the inmate’s belongings. He admitted in an interview, police said, that he took $1,500 from the inmate’s wallet and placed it in his property bag at the jail. He later walked out with the bag.

Young later told police he used the money to pay some bills and purchased a firearm, the citation said.

Shirley said Young will be lodged at the Warren County Jail, however. He was lodged in a cell by himself after his arrest on Wednesday.

The jailer said a termination letter was handed down after Young’s arrest. He had been employed at the Barren County Jail since June 21, 2021.

Shirley declined to comment further on the ongoing investigation.
