GLASGOW — Members of the Boys & Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County are receiving free hair treatment during the month of February.

Kenisha Franklin, the safety director at the club, said she came up with the idea to host the clinic after noticing kids didn’t know practical tips relating to hair care.

“I came up with the idea of having the hair clinic last year when I noticed a bunch of kids in foster care not knowing how to maintain their hair. It turned out to be amazing,” Franklin said. “It makes the girls feel really pretty about themselves, they learn how to maintain their hair and boys learn what razor guard to use.”

All the barbers and beauticians participating in the clinic are volunteers.

When asked why she volunteers for the clinic, Chloe Sherfey, local beautician, said it allows her to do what she loves – helping people and doing hair.

“Just to help the kids out…they don’t have time or the money to go get their hair done so I just help them out and I love what I do – helping people and doing hair,” Sherfey said.

Franklin added that this clinic is more than just teaching hair care. It allows students to be themselves.

“Every kid that walks out of here is so happy that their hair is done and they can feel beautiful,” Franklin said. “Not a lot of kids can rock their natural hair all the time because they’ll get made fun of at school and they can come here and be themselves.”

The clinic will be hosted every Thursday in February from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Donations are welcome, the club says.
