GLASGOW Ky. – The Glasgow City Council did vote in favor of raising the tax rate which at the end of the day will be $1 on $100,000 of assessed property. In the public hearing before the council meeting Jeff Greer, a property owner in Glasgow was the sole resident to speak up. Greer said the property value assessment is unequal and pointed to certain properties on the square that haven’t had their property value assessed in over a decade.

Greer noted one property whose values has remained a little over $1,000; meaning their annual tax bill is a little over $15. As properties around this one have seen work done in recent years the property values have gone up but with no reassessment there is little incentive for properties to improve. The City pointed Greer back to the PVA Office.

During the council meeting Council Joe Trigg, who was the only no vote for the tax rate increase said he felt this additional tax on properties would be passed on to renters with over half of residential homes in Glasgow being occupied by renters Councilmen Trigg felt this would not be good for the City of Glasgow going so far as to compare to the stormwater fee which he said was passed on to renters. Mayor Harold Armstrong disagreed saying he didn’t know of any landlord who passed that bill on to the renter but Trigg stood firm in his claim.

In other business, the Council rezoned a piece of property at the intersection of Lincoln Road and Myrtle Street from medium density business to multi-family.

The Council then went into closed session to discuss pending litigation and the possibility of securing building revenue bonds. No action was taken in the session.

The next council meeting is Monday, September 27 at 7 PM.
