Excessive heat expected across region

Jul 6, 2022 | 7:05 AM

GLASGOW — Excessive heat and humidity is expected to linger across much of the area through Thursday.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning Wednesday due to expected heat indices of 111 degrees Fahrenheit. Portions of southern Indiana and central Kentucky are included in the warning. Areas east of Barren County have a heat advisory in place.

The hot and humid conditions will contribute to a moderately unstable air mass, according to a NWS social media post.

Scattered thunderstorms may develop across much of southern Kentucky, mainly in the afternoon and evening. Localized hail, damaging winds, lightning and heavy rainfall may occur, too. Wind is the main concern, however.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, staying in air conditioned places or in shaded areas, check on relatives and neighbors and ensure children and pets are not left inside vehicles.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Strenuous activities should be limited to early morning or evening.
