Emergency food, shelter funding application opens

GLASGOW — Barren County Government announced Monday the county was selected to receive nearly $54,000 to fund emergency food and shelter programs in the area.

The funding came from the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, a news release said. The selection was made by a national board chaired by several representatives of agencies like the American Red Cross and United Way Worldwide.

The funding specifics are $13,190 worth of Phase 39 funding. ARPAR funding is $40,767.

A local board will determine how the funding is disbursed in the area. A number of those folks from the private and public sectors will contribute.

“The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program,” according to the news release.

The national board determines eligibility. Criteria is listed below.

  • The agency must be private voluntary non-profits or units of government.
  • The agency must be eligible to receive federal funds.
  • The agency must have an accounting system.
  • The agency must practice non-discrimination.
  • The agency must have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/ or shelter programs.
  • The agency, if a private voluntary organization, must have a voluntary board.

All qualifying organizations are urged to apply.

The Community Relief Fund of Glasgow and Barren County, Inc., Community Action of Southern Kentucky, Inc., Feeding America and the Barren River Area Safe Space have all been assisted by Barren County’s funding before, they said.

Eligible public and private agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funding must complete an application.
