Bertie Clara Johnson, age 103, of Brownsville, KY departed this life on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at her residence. The Edmonson County native was born on November 18, 1917 to the late Oscar and Lula Johnson Denham. She was married to Bro. William G. Johnson, who preceded her in death.
Bertie was a homemaker and worked with her hands to care for the needs of her family. She sewed their little dresses, raised a garden and canned vegetables to keep them fed. Most importantly, she raised them in church at Oak Grove United Baptist Church, where remained a member until her passing.
She leaves to honor her memory– her children, Vernice Childress (Elmo) of Mammoth Cave, Alpha Lindsey of Chalybeate, Roland Johnson (Mary) of Chalybeate, Bertie Evelyn Deweese (Larry) of Cecilia and William Earl Johnson (Sherry) of Mohawk; son-in-law, Jerry C. Vincent of Brownsville; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; siblings, John Denham, Clifford Denham and Mamie Spinks along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three children, Linda Kay Vincent, James Leonard Johnson and Virginia McPeak; a granddaughter, Debra Deweese; two son-in-laws, Lonard Lindsey and Kenneth McPeak and eight siblings, Gertie Denham, Emily East, Roy Denham, Lillie Mills, Mary Willoubly, Conard Denham, Elmer Denham and June Denham.
