LUCAS, Ky. – The Highlander Trail is getting closer to becoming a reality for bikers across the area.
One hundred forty acres of property, which contained two picnic loops and a picnic shelter, was recently relinquished to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer by the Kentucky Department of Parks. In order to increase recreational opportunities in the area, the Corps of Engineers was able to use an existing partnership agreement with the Southwest Kentucky Mountain Bike Association to develop a plan for constructing a multi-use trail network for hikers and mountain bikers.
The SWKyMBA also worked with Ed Sutton, of Trail Dynamics, to design an 8.6 mile trail corridor.
Site visits were completed over the last year. The visits culminated with a final report that was reviewed and approved by the State Historical Perseveration Office, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Corps of Engineers.
No timetable for the trail’s completion has been set, the initial phase is over.
Those interested in volunteering to construct the trail should call the Corps of Engineers at (270) 646-2055.
