Two of the top golfers to come out of the Girls’ Region 3 Golf Tournament battled to the wire in the first round of state.
Cumberland County’s Kenzie Willen, who won the regional, clipped Barren County’s Chloe Witcher by a stroke to register the low round at Maywood in Bardstown on Wednesday.
Willen finished at 2-under par 70, while Witcher posted a 1-under, 71. They both qualified for the finals of the state tournament next week at Bowling Green Country Club.
West Jessamine won the team title with a 22 over, while Bowling Green was second and Taylor County finished third.
Barren County qualified as a team for the first round and finished eighth.
Briley King shot 95, June Simpson fired 99, Kailynn Peterson posted a 103 and Riley Decker finished with a 103. Witcher is the only senior on the team.
Glasgow’s Harlow Bale also played in the state first round and shot an 87.
The Top 3 teams and the next 15 individuals not on one of those teams advance to the finals at Bowling Green Country Club.
