Glasgow automotive maintenance student Kesha Collins has been awarded a $500 scholarship that recognizes both her academic excellence and her determination to build a better future for her family.
Plaza Tire Service, in partnership with the Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College Foundation, awarded the scholarship to Collins as she pursues automotive maintenance studies at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College.
Officials say the award is intended to help reduce financial barriers so Collins can continue her education and reach her long-term career goals.
Collins, who lives in Glasgow, carries a 3.92 GPA while studying in a field that is traditionally male-dominated.
She is also a mother of four who recently took in her two great-nephews, and she views her education as a way to set a strong example for the children in her care.
Collins said her interest in automotive work is deeply personal and inspired by her late brother and her father, who was also a mechanic.
She said she hopes her career will provide stability for her family and eventually allow her to own both a home and an auto repair shop.
“I come from a long line of people that have never really had much,” Collins said.
“I’m striving to do better for my kids. I’m hoping one day to own our home and maybe a shop.”
Beyond her own career goals, Collins has plans to use her training to give back to the community.
She said she wants to offer preventative maintenance education to local youth before they leave high school so they understand how to take care of their vehicles.
“Your vehicle plays a major role in your lifeline and future,” Collins said.
“It’s difficult to make money to provide for yourself and the people you care about if your wheels are at a standstill.”
In addition to her coursework, Collins stays active in the region’s automotive community as a member of SOKY Street Rods.
