The Barren County Sheriff’s Office is warning nurses and other healthcare professionals about a phone scam that targets their professional licenses.
According to the sheriff’s office, the scam involves callers who claim to be federal agents and tell victims that their nursing license has been suspended or is under investigation.
The scammers then escalate the pressure by threatening that the victim’s bank accounts and property will be seized if they do not comply with the caller’s demands.
The sheriff’s office is urging the public not to provide any personal information, banking information, or money to these callers.
The sheriff’s office reminds everyone that legitimate government agencies will not threaten you over the phone with the immediate seizure of your bank accounts or property in this manner.
“If you receive a suspicious call, do not engage with the caller or provide any information,” the sheriff’s office stated in a social media post. “Hang up and independently contact your licensing agency or local law enforcement using a verified phone number.”
In the social media post, the sheriff’s office summed up its advice with this message: “When in doubt, hang up and verify.”
