It took eight full innings to decide the winner between Barren County and Allen County-Scottsville on Thursday night. In the end, the visiting Patriots pulled out the 3-1 victory at Trojan Field.
The loss dropped Barren to 2-2 in 15th District baseball action and 13-11 overall, while Allen improved to 2-2 in district and 10-13 overall.
Most of the game was a pitching duel. Cameron Crawford pitch all eight innings for the Trojans. He allowed 10 hits, struck out six and walked none.
Barren mustered 12 hits in the game, but struggled to turn those hits into runs. There were several chances. The first coming in the bottom of the first inning when Colten Wilson drew a one-out walk, followed by single from Jaxon Pierce. Gavin Coffey followed with a single, but the Patriots got Pierce out at third. Skylar Potter drew a walk after that to load the bases, but a pop out ended the inning.
The Trojans had gotten out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first when they pulled a pitcher to catcher to first base double play.
Barren scored its lone regulation run in the bottom of the fourth. Potter led off with a single. He moved to second on a fly out by Price Thompson. Dylan Poynter drove in Potter with a single.
Allen County responded with its regulation run in the top of the fifth.
The score remained tied 1-1 until the top of the eighth inning. The Patriots opened that inning with a pair of singles, then loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch. They scored two runs on a sacrifice fly to right field.
In the bottom of the eighth, Crawford led off with a single, but the game ended with a trio of strike outs.
For Barren at the plate, Wilson, Pierce, Coffey, Crawford and Poynter each had a pair of hits, while Potter and Thompson each had a hit.
The Trojans return to action Friday at 5:30 p.m. at home against Cumberland County.
