Parvovirus was found in puppies at Weldon Park, according to a social media post by Glasgow Parks and Recreation.

On April 6, two stray puppies that were “roaming in Weldon Park” were turned over to Glasgow-Barren County Animal Control officers. After an examination by a veterinarian the puppies tested positive for the virus, according to information provided by Glasgow Parks and Recreation.

The dogs were not located within the designated dog park area, according to the City of Glasgow.

Parvovirus is a “highly contagious, often fatal virus that attacks the gastrointestinal tract and immune system of unvaccinated dogs,” the American Veterinary Medical Association stated. Some signs of the virus is lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, severe, and often bloody, diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating, fever or low body temperature, and drooling, according to the association.

This public notice is primarily given as a precaution, said Eddie Furlong, Glasgow parks and recreation director.

“We are working with local veterinarians as well as BRAWA to monitor the situation,” the post stated. “We strongly recommend not bringing your dogs to Weldon Park unless they have been vaccinated for Parvovirus.”
