Glasgow News 1

Kentucky State Police are warning residents about a scam involving fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the agency about unpaid traffic violations.

The messages are not legitimate and often include a link accompanied by urgent language, apparently trying to pressure people into making an immediate payment or taking quick action, according to the state police.

Recipients are strongly advised not to click any links and to delete the message right away.

State police emphasize that they do not contact individuals by text message about citations, fines or payments and any communication that asks for payment through a text message should be treated as suspicious, according to the state police.

Reports received today appear to be part of a broader trend that law enforcement has noticed in recent weeks and months. KSP says there have been multiple complaints involving similar scam messages that attempt to impersonate well-known and trusted organizations. Those include Amazon, the Kentucky State Police, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety and other reputable groups.

State police urge the public, including people in Barren County, to remain cautious any time they receive an unexpected or unusual message that asks for money or personal information. They recommend verifying any payment request directly with the organization using a trusted phone number or website, rather than through links in a text message.
